Nana's poem

Nana was dying to know my name before I was born, but my 'rents said "no way" and kept their mouths shut. This meant she couldn't have my poem ready for me when I was born, but she got to work as soon as she could. And at last, here it is!

Ode For Cameron, upon Finding Himself in an Extended Family

No matter how deftly we each tried to seek it,

Until you were born, your name was kept secret.

Month after month, in two-thousand and nine,

Chris and Rachel were silent, just biding their time;

Frustrating, for one, corny-poetess, Nana,

In creating name-rhymes for our new top banana.

On October the ninth, at twelve-ten in the morn,

    CAMERON JOSEPH BAKER was born.

“He’s twenty-one inches,” the night nurse announces,

“And weighs in at seven pounds and thirteen ounces.”

Full praises resound! Mom should be crowned.

“His head: fourteen, three-quarters inches around.”

Through all of that pain, one great thing remains:

Think of all of the brains that that sweet skull contains!

Forgive me if I stammer on, if I’m blown away and clamor on,

And join with the whole clan, anon, extolling all that’s Cameron.

On Mom’s side, there’s Great-grandpa Charles and your Nana,

First-time-Uncle Ari, and Auntie Vencenza.

On Dad’s side, Great-grandma Audrey, et al., offer you bliss

[These come with “the dude,” Cam –Are you ready for this?]

Grandma Sheila, Grandpa Conley, and Aunt Kelley, too

Join all family and friends in well wishes for you.

Uncle Shane, Aunt Bridget and your new cousin, Alice,

Are all pleased to learn about who their new pal is.

Machelle, Craig, Alexa, Kyle, Gianni, and Nico,

Karen, Steve, Jessica –all can’t wait to see you.

Sheila, Mike, Cousins Amanda and Jenny,

Sharon, Don, Stacey, Christina and Danny—

All here to love you and help you along;

Read you a book, or sing you a song.

Please don’t blame us for now waxing lyrical.

No one could help but love such a miracle!

(Except maybe “Cairo” and “Leo”-the-wary;

Cat-ears hear ‘crying-out-loud’ as plain scary!)

There isn’t much glamour in being induced,

Except when it’s Cameron being produced.

Wherever Life takes you; wherever you roam,

You’re always beloved in your Home Sweet Home.
